WASHINGTON — A pair of old friends will reconnect when the Boston Red Sox visit the Washington Nationals on Monday night.

Former teammates Rick Porcello (9-2 Robert Thomas Jersey , 3.60) of the Red Sox and Max Scherzer (10-4, 2.04) square off for the first time in the opener of a three-game series.

Porcello and Scherzer spent five seasons together with the Detroit Tigers, reaching the 2012 World Series before losing to the San Francisco Giants.

Since leaving Detroit, Porcello won the 2016 American League Cy Young Award and Scherzer is making a strong case for his third straight National League Cy Young. Both have been aware this matchup was coming.

“Looking forward to it. We’ve been texting back and forth,” Porcello told the Boston Globe. “We’ve had a good time with it and I’m sure we’ll both get a kick about going against each other once the game starts.”

Scherzer is looking for his first win since June 5, though he’s pitched well enough to win each of his past four starts, allowing two earned runs or less in each outing. The Nationals are 1-3 in those starts and were shut out in each loss.

“I think everybody’s been punched in the face before of not having success,” Scherzer told The Washington Post after his last start, a 1-0 loss to the Marlins. “This is the big leagues; they are going to keep coming down your throat and keep attacking you.”

Scherzer Ryan Smith Jersey , Washington’s only dependable starter of late, is 4-4 with a 6.05 ERA in 10 starts versus Boston.

Porcello allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings last time out in a no-decision against the Angels.

He’s 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in his lone start against Washington, an eight-inning effort in April of 2015.

The Nationals (42-40) squandered an early 3-0 lead in Philadelphia on Sunday and fell 4-3 in 13 innings on Andrew Knapp’s pinch-hit walk-off home run as Washington dropped a second straight weekend series to their division rivals.

Washington managed only four hits in eight innings against the Philadelphia bullpen in the finale.

“Offensively, we’ve got to do more,” outfielder Adam Eaton told The Post. “That’s plain and simple. We score early and then we can’t coast. We can’t take our foot off the accelerator. We got to keep going.”

The Nationals are now 6-15 in their past 21 games and fell six games behind Atlanta in the NL East.

In each of their last nine losses, they’ve scored three or fewer runs.

“We’ve got to start striking out less,” manager Dave Martinez told MASN, “putting the balls in play, driving in runs when we have the ability to drive in runs.”

Boston (56-29) finished a three-game series against the Yankees on a forgettable note Sunday night Emmanuel Lamur Jersey , getting routed 11-1 behind starter David Price as New York blasted six home runs, including three by Aaron Hicks.

Price allowed eight runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings.

The Red Sox dropped two of three and travel south percentage points behind the Yankees in the AL East.

Jon Gruden was antsy at the start of the first training camp practice for the Oakland Raiders as he was mostly a spectator while his assistants worked on fundamentals in position drills.

After a nearly 10-year wait to get back into coaching, Gruden was eager to get things going in the first training camp of his second stint as Raiders coach.

"I had a hard time standing and watching," Gruden said Friday. "It's just awesome to be here. It's a great responsibility. I know I have a lot to prove and I'm eager to do the best I can to do it."

Gruden is far and away the biggest star and personality on the Raiders in his return to coaching after spending the past nine years as ESPN's analyst on "Monday Night Football."

He's adored by the Raiders fans who cheered his every move, and he provided a vocal soundtrack at practice when he barked out at his players and coaches after mistakes. He even ribbed the practice D.J. at one point.

"He's kind of like a player on the field," linebacker Derrick Johnson said. "He's very energetic. He's loud, he's talking trash. He wants to win. You can see his passion as a player. I can appreciate that. He's all in. There's a different kind of sense of urgency that we have going out to practice on the first day. It's pretty exciting."

There was one important piece missing, however. Star pass rusher Khalil Mack is holding out while looking for a long-term contract. Mack is entering the final season of his rookie contract that is set to pay him $13.8 million and has not taken part in the offseason program.

Gruden said he leaves the negotiations to general manager Reggie McKenzie

"Hopefully we get him in here soon because he's an exciting player," Gruden said. "He's one of the best in football."

Getting Mack back will be important for Gruden as he tries to revitalize the Raiders after the team went from 12 wins and a playoff berth in 2016 to a 6-10 record last season that led to the firing of coach Jack Del Rio.

He has worked relentlessly since getting hired in January. He had to hire a coaching staff Ray Lewis Jersey , install new systems, adjust to changes in the league since he last coached in Tampa Bay in 2008, and overhaul a roster that had several holes.

Getting quarterback Derek Carr back to the level he played at when he was an MVP candidate in 2016 is one of the top tasks. After a breakthrough year in his third NFL season, Carr struggled last year as he dealt with an injured back.

He matched his career high with 13 interceptions and recorded his worst totals in yards, touchdowns and passer rating since his rookie year in 2014.

Carr said he feels revitalized under the tutelage of Gruden, whom he first met at a TV quarterback camp before the 2014 draft.

"I don't know if anything with him surprises you," Carr said. "He has not changed one bit since the first time I met him at Gruden's QB camp to the first day of actual training camp practice. He is the same person. That says a lot. That doesn't change. He is always fiery, he loves football, he wants to win Lance Alworth Jersey , he loves his players, he loves his coaches, and he demands from you."

Gruden is loved in Oakland and feels the same way about the Raiders fans who have pined for his return ever since he was traded to Tampa Bay following the 2001 season.

He even hosted a fan appreciation night last week at a local bar, Ricky's Sports Theatre and Grill, which serves as a hangout for Raiders fans. More than 500 fans showed up for the event, getting treated by Gruden to a free meal and a pep rally.

"I don't go out very often and when I do I like to be with people who are like-minded," Gruden said. "To associate with the real Raiders fans who support you through thick and thin, that's good stuff."

NOTES: Gruden said LT Donald Penn is getting close to returning from foot surgery that ended his 2017 season but still needs to prove he can move explosively. ... Rookie P.J. Hall is sidelined for the start of camp with a strained pectoral muscle.

Zack Godley followed one of his worst outings of the season with perhaps his best. Perfect timing for Arizona Anthony Barr Jersey , too.

Godley pitched six effective innings in his 10th win, helping the Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 on Friday night.

Arizona improved to 2-6 on its 10-game homestand and regained sole possession of first place in the NL West from the Los Angeles Dodgers, who lost 3-2 to the Angels.

Godley (10-6) allowed one run and four hits while improving to 5-1 in his last six starts. He was rocked for seven runs in four innings in a loss to San Francisco in his last outing.

”The way this game works you kind of have to let it go and move on,” Godley said. ”Baseball is a short-memory sport.”

Asked what was working, he said: ”my curve and my defense.”

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Godley’s command was ”as good as I can remember.”

”There’s been a couple of games so far this year where he has had outings like that DeForest Buckner Jersey ,” Lovullo said. ”But today’s was one of the better ones that I’ve seen in a long time.”

Steven Souza Jr. drove in two runs with a single and fielder’s choice in his second game back from the disabled list. Souza has played in just 17 games this season due to a right pectoral injury.

Joey Lucchesi (4-4) retired 14 in a row before Arizona scored twice in the sixth. Lucchesi went 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and three hits with two strikeouts, one walk and two hit batters.

He grazed A.J. Pollock with a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the tying run.

Nick Ahmed doubled, singled and scored twice for the Diamondbacks. Brad Boxberger threw a perfect ninth for his 21st save in 25 tries.

The Padres have lost 14 of 18.

Lucchesi’s first big league hit helped the Padres take the lead in the third. The rookie singled to left, advanced to third on Travis Jankowski’s long single to the right-field corner and scored when Carlos Asuaji grounded out.

The Diamondbacks threatened in the first when David Peralta was hit by a pitch and Paul Goldschmidt lashed a ground-rule double that bounced into the Arizona bullpen. But they came up empty when Pollock grounded out and Souza struck out looking.

Arizona didn’t get another baserunner until Godley drew a leadoff walk in the sixth. The Diamondbacks loaded the bases with one-out singles by Ahmed and Goldschmidt and Lucchesi hit Pollock to bring in the tying run.

That was it for Lucchesi. Reliever Adam Cimber bobbled Souza’s slow grounder and still got the out at first Tyreek Hill Jersey , but Ahmed scored and the Diamondbacks led 2-1.

”He threw the ball well,” Padres manager Andy Green said of Lucchesi. ”We didn’t do too much for him offensively. You get to that sixth inning, his pitch count is low. You want to see him attack that inning. The thing that hurts him is the walk to Godley. Outside of that I think it was a very good day for him.”

Ahmed led off the eighth with a double and scored on Souza’s two-out single.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Padres: RHP Phil Hughes (right rhomboid strain) was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list and RHP Kirby Yates returned from paternity leave. RHPs Kazuhisa Makita and Robert Stock were optioned to Triple-A El Paso.

Diamondbacks: RHP Randall Delgado (strained left oblique) was reinstated from the 60-day DL. RHP Fernando Salas was designated for assignment.

NOT SIGNING

California high school shortstop Matt McLain, Arizona’s first-round pick and the 25th overall player taken in the draft, informed the Diamondbacks he will not sign with them and will instead enroll at UCLA. The Diamondbacks will get a compensatory pick Doug Kotar Jersey , the 27th overall, next year.

Arizona LHP Robbie Ray (3-1. 4.89 ERA) makes his third start since returning from the disabled list and San Diego counters with RHP Tyler Ross (5-6, 3.89 ERA) on Saturday night in the third game of the four-game series.

Veteran tackle Duane Brown arrived in Seattle last year via a trade with the Texans. And it looks like he’ll be staying.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Seahawks and Brown are “almost there” on an extension.

Brown, who held out into the 2017 regular season in an effort to get a new deal or force a trade Aaron Rodgers Jersey , was due to make $9.75 million in 2018, the final year of his contract.

He turns 33 next months, which naturally will keep the terms in a more reasonable range than the top of the market. Look for something in the neighborhood of $10 million to $11 million per year, perhaps with the first two years guaranteed.

The Seahawks have struggled to find quality and consistency on the offensive line. Brown’s presence could go a long way toward boosting a team that seems to be shifting the focus from defense to offense.

With Kyrie Irving ruled out for the rest of the season Tre'Davious White Jersey , the Celtics now have a clearer picture of what their roster will look like entering the postseason.

In its 111-104 win over the Chicago on Friday night, Boston showed that at the very least it has a remaining group of players eager to step up and contribute to its injury-torn rotation.

Greg Monroe came off the bench and had 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to notch his second career triple-double. Jaylen Brown finished with a career-high 32 points as the Celtics stopped a two-game slide.

It was Boston’s first game since Kyrie Irving was ruled out for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs because of an upcoming surgery on his left knee.

”Guys were resting, guys are hurt,” Monroe said. ”I guess (the offense) was running through me by default, I guess. But it was just about moving the ball.”

Coach Brad Stevens said his message to the team afterward was that ”everything matters” from this point forward.

With Al Horford and Jayson Tatum given the night off to rest, Boston went deep into its bench against a Chicago team that’s one of the worst in the NBA.

Chicago led by as many as 11 in the first half before Boston trimmed it to 58-55 at the half. The Celtics outscored the Bulls 56-46 over the final two quarters.

Sean Kilpatrick led Chicago with 24 points. Lauri Markkanen added 20 points and five rebounds.

”I thought we went out there and played really hard and put ourselves in a position to be there right at the end patrick mahomes authentic jersey ,” Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said.

Stevens said the effort of younger players such as Jabari Bird (career-high 15 points) and new addition Jonathan Gibson (nine points) is most encouraging. Gibson, 30, was officially signed out of the Chinese Basketball Association via an injury hardship waiver earlier in the day. He took a red-eye flight to make it in time for tip-off.

”I was triple-teamed all year, coming out here and being open and being the floor spacer and being able to create for other guys was definitely a great opportunity for me,” he said.

Marcus Morris and Bobby Portis were both ejected late in the third quarter after receiving back-to-back double-technical fouls.

TIP-INS

Bulls: Had a three-game winning streak snapped. … Went 14 of 30 from the 3-point line.

Celtics: Monroe is the first Celtics center to record a triple-double since Robert Parish did it on March 29, 1987. … Bird made his first career 3-pointer in the first quarter. In his first nine career NBA games he had just five points on 1-of-4 shooting. In the first 8 minutes on Friday he scored 11 points, connecting on 5 of his first 8 field goals.

GETTING REST

Stevens said the plan over Boston’s final three regular-season games is give other players rest as well before the start of the playoffs.

”I’d like to get one Montravius Adams Jersey , possibly two games with our group as is to play before we head in,” Stevens said. ”We’ll manage that as we move forward. Knock on wood.”

STAYING UPBEAT

Stevens said Irving was ”bummed” after his decision to have his latest procedure, which is scheduled for Saturday. It will be his second surgery on the knee in a month, and will remove screws at the site of an infection.

Terry Rozier said Irving was in good spirits when he spoke with teammates.

”It wasn’t affecting him at all. And if it was we wouldn’t know because he’s that type of type of guy he is,” Rozier said. ”He’s still joking. … He’s still making everybody laugh when you come in the room. So you can’t really tell.”

Irving’s long-term prognosis is good, Stevens said.

”The structure of the knee is good. Everything around the knee is good,” Stevens said. ”Everybody’s told us from the get-go that it was going to be a full recovery. We just didn’t anticipate having to take the screws out. But that shouldn’t affect him at all as far as a full recovery goes.”

More NBA basketball:

The Seahawks signed veteran wide receiver Brandon Marshall this offseason Shilique Calhoun Jersey , putting him in prime position to join the 1,000-catch club.

If he makes the roster.

That, however, is no lock, according to ESPN, which points out that Marshall’s meager guarantee of $90,000 means it would be easy for Seattle to cut him before the start of the regular season.

The 34-year-old Marshall is coming off two surgeries Bruce Irvin Jersey , one on his ankle and one on his toe, and he played in just five games last year. In those five games he managed just 18 catches for 154 yards, a career-low average of 8.6 yards per catch. Marshall hasn’t been able to do much this offseason because of a hamstring injury.

Marshall himself admitted that “I’m not where I want to be, not even close, but my goal is to be in midseason form come camp.”

If Marshall isn’t where the Seahawks want him to be in camp, don’t be surprised if he’s not on the team when the regular season starts.

OAKLAND Patrick Willis Jersey , Calif. — Two veteran coaches had a similar message for their teams on the eve of Game 4 of the Western Conference finals between the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night.

“It starts 0-0,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said of Game 4. “It doesn’t matter if we won (the previous game) by one or 41.”

In fact, the Warriors did win Game 3 on Sunday by 41 points, 126-85, to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven.

The margin of victory not only was the largest in Warriors postseason history, but the margin of defeat also was the biggest ever for a team that won 65 or more games in the regular season.

Stephen Curry, who had missed 17 of his 20 3-point attempts in the first 10 quarters of the series, sent the Warriors’ home crowd into a frenzy by making 4 of 5 in the second half Sunday en route to 35 points.

It was a performance that brought back memories to Kerr of the Boston Celtics’ Danny Ainge.

“I don’t remember what I had for breakfast, but I remember what Danny Ainge said 30 years ago,” Kerr warned. “They won a playoff game by 40, and he said Jeremy Hill Jersey , ‘This is not the Tour de France. You don’t start with a big lead because it’s not based on time or how much you won by.’

“It’s the NBA, so it’s 2-1 (in the series). So doesn’t matter what happened (Sunday). We have to be ready for a great team that’s going to come out like they did in Game 2, attacking, hair on fire and taking the force to us, and we have to be ready for that.”

The Rockets’ margin of defeat Sunday was almost identical to the number of fewer points scored by Eric Gordon, P.J. Tucker and Trevor Ariza in Game 3 than in Game 2.

Key members of the James Harden/Chris Paul supporting cast — Gordon, Tucker and Ariza — combined for 23-of-33 shooting and contributed 68 points to a 127-105 series-evening home win in Game 2.

On Sunday, they went a combined 8 of 24 and 23 points in the blowout loss.

Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni wasn’t singling out anyone when he assessed the Game 3 performance.

“We didn’t bring our best game,” he observed. “But I’m hoping for the best (in Game 4). I hope we play great and them bad. Never know.”

The loss was the Rockets’ fourth of the postseason. They rebounded with wins after each of the first three, romping by an average of 20.7 points.

This time, they’ll be up against a Warriors team that has won an NBA-record 16 straight playoff games at home.

D’Antoni went as far as to say the pressure is on the Warriors Matt Ryan Jersey , who would hand the home-court advantage back to Houston with a loss in Game 4.

“I hope so,” Kerr reacted to his rival’s statement. “We’re much better when the pressure’s on. He’s right. We’re at home, so if they win, they have home-court advantage. So, yeah, pressure’s on us. It’s kind of on them, too.”

A devout student of the game, LeBron James understands that history says the Cavaliers will likely eliminate the Raptors.

The Toronto test isn’t over.

”We still got some work to do,” he said.

By winning Games 1 and 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinal on the road, James and the Cleveland Cavaliers are in position to eliminate the Raptors for the third straight postseason. The Cavs have won eight straight playoff games over top-seeded Toronto heading into Saturday night’s Game 3.

The Cavs are 15-0 in the playoffs when they’ve opened a 2-0 lead. James, a three-time champion Mark Duper Jersey , has an even more impressive mark – 21-0 when winning the first two games.

But while the past points to Cleveland eventually moving into the conference finals against Boston or Philadelphia, James knows better than to rush things.

”There’s no fast-tracking the process where you say, `OK, let’s try to end this thing so we can get some rest,”’ he said following the team’s morning shootaround. ”You do that and you get a lot of rest. You do that and you can be home and end up losing 4-2. So, that ain’t it. No, you don’t do that. You don’t cheat the game gods. I’ve never been a part of that.”

James is coming off a 43-point performance in Game 2, when he demoralized the Raptors with fadeaway jumpers that were virtually indefensible. He’s having perhaps his finest playoff run, averaging 34.4 points, 9.9 rebounds and 9.0 assists in 41.8 minutes.

Pushed to seven games in the opening round by the Indiana Pacers, the Cavs entered their series with Toronto as underdogs. But once again Irving Fryar Jersey , they’re controlling the Raptors who know beating James four times in five games will take everything they have.

”It’s 0-2 period,” Toronto forward C.J. Miles said. ”Don’t get me wrong, I’m not me disrespecting the guy. You don’t want to be down 0-2 to anybody. It’s unfortunate; especially looking at the fact we had 59 wins and were one of the best home teams in the league. You don’t see that coming from us on our home floor, which is why it’s disappointing, especially the second game, not being able to do what we wanted to do.

”We are where we are now.”

Former NFL wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. says he battled depression during his 16-year career with the Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens.

Smith James White Jersey , who retired after the 2016 season and now works as an analyst for the NFL Network, told NFL that despite making five Pro Bowls and being selected All-Pro twice he "routinely felt trapped, inferior and alone" and often asked himself "what's wrong with me?"

The 39-year-old Smith said by his final season with Carolina in 2013 he was so overwhelmed he didn't know how to handle his emotions and "was a cynic of everything and everyone."

Smith says he's been receiving treatment for depression and advised others to do the same, saying "stop trying to deal with these serious matters alone."

Panthers coach Ron Rivera praised Smith for speaking out on the topic.

Dez Bryant has been looking for work for nearly two months. One veteran pass catcher has a possible answer.

Titans tight end Delanie Walker would be happy to have Bryant in Tennessee.

“[W]e鈥檝e got some good, premier聽receivers on our team, Corey Davis Lavonte David Jersey , Rishard Matthews,” Walker said Saturday at Michael Crabtree‘s youth football camp in Dallas, via the Dallas Morning News. “It鈥檚 another element if they was to bring him to the team. If he can help us out, gladly I would welcome him with open arms.”

Like so many others, Walker believes Bryant has plenty left in the tank.

“I see him in my type of situation, you know Cordrea Tankersley Jersey , an older vet guy,” Walker said. “And I鈥檓 able to play at a high level, so I鈥檓 still sure he鈥檚 able to play at a high level. People have got to remember, it鈥檚 football. Some years you鈥檙e going to have bad years, some years you鈥檙e going to have good years. And, you know Trent Brown Jersey , they鈥檝e got to look at the better years he had than him having one bad year.”

But here’s the thing. Bryant didn’t have one bad year. He’s had three straight seasons that don’t reflect No. 1 receiver performance, all of which came after he signed his long-term deal in Dallas. His subpar effort in 2015 resulted from injury. In 2016, he played in 13 games and generated fewer than 800 yards. Last year, his total numbers were up, but per-catch average plunged from 15.9 yards to 12.1.

So it’s unclear whether he can still perform at a high level. And it’s unclear whether he’d be happy with the third spot on a depth chart. And it’s unclear whether he’d be able to translate motivation into production.

Regardless, with offseason programs nearly over Lyle Alzado Jersey , Bryant will face a real challenge to learn an offense and earn playing time if/when he signs. And the later he agrees to terms into training camp, the harder it will be.

After just four major league starts Mike Daniels Jersey , Miami Marlins right-hander Pablo Lopez looks like he’s got the hang of it. Or at least he did Saturday night.

Lopez gave up one run on three hits in six innings, Cameron Maybin homered and the Marlins beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2.

”He’s going to keep getting better. I think he’s going to learn from every start,” said Marlins manager Don Mattingly. ”His look is different than most guys with three or four starts under their belt. He’s pretty composed.”

Lopez (2-1) struck out six, helping the Marlins match their longest winning streak of the season at four games.

”(Major league hitters are) the best at what they do. That’s why they’re here, and they’re ready to hit pitches,” said the 22-year-old Lopez. ”Our job is to break their rhythm, and that’s what we try to do.”

Joey Wendle led off the Tampa Bay fourth with a home run, his fifth, after Lopez had pitched three perfect innings. Lesson learned.

”I fell behind in the count and missed my spot. He took the chance and he hit it,” Lopez said.

Rays manager Kevin Cash noted the way Lopez was able to change his fastball.

”He cut it, he sank it. I’m not sure if it was by design or what, but you could tell it had a lot of late life through the zone Demar Dotson Jersey ,” Cash said.

The Marlins, who have won four of five against the Rays this season, pulled even in the all-time Florida series, 56-56. A win in Sunday’s series finale would give them their first five-game win streak since April 24-30, 2016.

Maybin’s third home run came in the seventh off Rays reliever Hunter Wood.

Martin Prado drove in the game’s first run with a double in the fourth off Ryan Yarbrough (8-5) and scored on Miguel Rojas‘ ground ball.

Adam Conley, Drew Steckenrider and Kyle Barraclough each pitched an inning of relief for the Marlins. Barraclough earned his 10th save in 13 opportunities despite giving up a 460-foot home run to Ji-Man Choi.

Rays shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria was lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh due to a sore left oblique. Justin Williams, the pinch hitter who was called up from Triple-A Durham Saturday and arrived at the game in the third inning, grounded into a double play in his first major league at-bat.

The one-run loss was the 23rd of the season for the Rays, who have lost five of their last six overall.

MORE TIME OFF

Rays CF Kevin Kiermaier says he will be out until at least Monday after getting a cortisone shot for a bone bruise on his foot, an injury stemming from a foul ball on April 8. ”If I can just have this back to normal, then I’ll finally feel like I have my body under me once again for the first time since opening week of the season,” said Kiermaier Nazair Jones Jersey , who returned June 19 after missing 57 games due to a torn right thumb ligament.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Marlins: Barraclough returned to the team after missing Friday night’s game with ”a little bit of a stomach thing going on,” according to Mattingly.

Rays: 3B Matt Duffy (back spasms) was out of the lineup for the second straight game but might start Sunday.

MINORS MATTERS

Marlins: RHP Tyler Kolek (right shoulder), taken second overall in the 2014 draft, allowed four runs and four hits over two-thirds of an inning in his second start for the GCL Marlins. On the Class A Greensboro disabled list, Kolek made five GCL appearances last year after missing 2016 following Tommy John surgery.

UP NEXT

RHP Trevor Richards (3-5) will pitch for the Marlins against RHP Chris Archer (3-4) in the finale of the six-game intrastate series.

The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension with Danielle Hunter, making him one of the top 10 highest-paid defensive ends in the NFL while securing another core player before he could reach free agency.

The deal, which was done on Wednesday, is worth up to $72 million, according to a person with knowledge of the contract who spoke on condition of anonymity because the terms weren't disclosed by the team.

The deal includes $40 million in guaranteed money, with a $15 million signing bonus. The annual average worth is more than $14 million, on par with fellow Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen.

"I had to get this out of the way," Hunter said Oren Burks Jersey , acknowledging relief to have signed before training camp. "I didn't want to be bothered by anything."

Hunter has 25陆 sacks, three forced fumbles and two recovered fumbles in three seasons, after being drafted in the third round in 2015 out of LSU. Still only 23 years old, Hunter was a top priority to retain at a premium position. Griffen is 30, and primary backup Brian Robison is 35.

"Just looking forward to getting him locked in and what he's going to continue to bring not only to this defense and this football team, but also the type of character that he brings," general manager Rick Spielman said.

Over those past three seasons, Hunter and Griffen have combined for 57 sacks, the second most by a pair of teammates in the league behind Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap of the Cincinnati Bengals (58).

The pass rush and run defense provided by these bookends has been a significant part of coach Mike Zimmer's unit that gave up the fewest points and yards in the NFL last season.

"We build a bond together on defense," Hunter said. "We go out there, we know we're brothers. We fight together. We do our assignments. On and off the field we're really, really close.

Hunter was third in the NFL with 12陆 sacks in 2016 Mitch Morse Jersey , the most by a defensive end. Born in Jamaica and raised just outside of Houston, the 6-foot-5, 252-pound Hunter was a classic late bloomer the Vikings targeted with confidence he'd continue to develop with the right coaching to complement his measurable physical skills. Spielman and his scouts have been proven right with that pick.

"I kind of came in with the mindset of just playing football. I had a whole bunch of people in front of me, older guys that were able to show me the way, good coaches and a good coaching staff," Hunter said. "The only thing I could do is just come in here and focus and play football."

The Vikings extended middle linebacker Eric Kendricks earlier this offseason. Outside linebacker Anthony Barr and wide receiver Stefon Diggs are their other two standouts on expiring contracts, with space under the salary cap dwindling. Signing both of them to new long-term deals might not be possible.

They're plenty happy to at least have Hunter around well into the next decade, though. According to statistics compiled by Vikings coaches, Hunter also has 125 quarterback hurries and 147 total tackles. He has never missed an NFL game to injury, with his only two absences coming in 2015 when he was on the inactive list in the first month of his rookie year.

"It's all about keep continuing to improve my game. I've got to go out there and do what the coaches tell me to do. Now that I have this I can't relax," Hunter said. "I have to keep pounding and grinding."

MILWAUKEE — Four months ago Jermon Bushrod Jersey , Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell was trying to figure out how to fit Jesus Aguilar onto his roster. Now, Counsell is having a hard time taking the hard-hitting first baseman out of his starting lineup.

Aguilar has been Milwaukee’s hottest hitter over the last month, batting .283 with 12 home runs, 34 RBIs and a .964 OPS. Five of those home runs along with 12 RBIs have come over his last five games and he’s driven in multiple runs in five straight starts, tying a franchise record.

“He’s certainly been one of the most pleasant surprises (this year),” Counsell said. “He was last year, as well and he’s taken it up a notch this year. You need those kind of performances you weren’t expecting. You need that kind of stuff.”

All that from a player who came to spring training not sure if he’d have a job when the regular season opened.

Acquired off waivers ahead of the 2017 season Raekwon McMillan Jersey , Aguilar split time at first with Eric Thames last year, forming a potent right-left platoon combo. But after the Brewers acquired outfielders Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain over the winter, the team planned to transition outfielder Ryan Braun as an occasional right-handed option at first, which seemingly diminished Aguilar’s role.

He played his way onto the roster with another strong spring training and established himself as a dangerous pinch-hitting threat before taking over first base on a more regular basis when Thames was lost to a thumb injury on April 25.

“I’m confident in myself. When I get a chance to go, I’m going to give my 100 percent. That’s how I think.”

Thames, who’s spent the majority of his playing time in the outfield since returning June 11, is still adjusting to the position but is happy for his teammate.

“I mean Ryan Jensen Jersey , hey, the team is winning,” Thames said. “It was the same thing for him the first half of last year when I was going off. It’s great because we’re winning and today, he pretty much did it himself and it was awesome. I’m happy for him. He works hard. He’s such a smart hitter, smart player. He’s a great team guy so you can’t help but root for him.”

His bat — as well as his defensive ability — have been a source of comfort for Brewers pitchers this season and will be Saturday for Chase Anderson, who takes the mound for Game 2 of the Brewers’ four-game series with the Cardinals at Miller Park.

Anderson has yet to find the consistency that led to his breakout season a year ago. He’s 5-6 with a 4.54 ERA through his first 15 starts and has struggled keeping the ball inside the park.

He’s allowed 15 home runs this season — one more than he gave up in all of 2017 — with 13 of those coming at Miller Park, where he’s 3-3 with a 5.70 ERA this season.

He gave up two home runs in the opening inning his last time out Dean Lowry Jersey , upping his first-inning ERA this season to 8.36.

“It’s just one of those deals,” Anderson said. “That’s kind of been my thing since I was a kid. Obviously, I need to correct it and work on it and get better at getting guys out quicker. Something to work on.”

The Cardinals answer with right-hander Miles Mikolas, who’s 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA in two career starts against the Brewers, both of which came this season.

He allowed four runs over 5 2/3 innings but took the victory on April 2 at Miller Park but didn’t factor in the decision after giving up another four runs, this time over 6 1/3 innings, in a 5-4 Cardinals loss on April 9 in St. Louis.

“He pounds the strike zone and uses multiple pitches Tyrell Williams Jersey ,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. “It’s just not every day you come across starters who can do that … and then to have durability and consistency to stay in the game as long as he has.”

A victory Saturday would mark Milwaukee’s second series victory over the Cardinals in three tries this season.

San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Arik Armstead has been sidelined by a hamstring injury.

The 49ers announced Tuesday that Armstead is week-to-week because of the injury. The team also said tight end Cole Hikutini will miss practice this week with a groin injury and right guard Joshua Garnett is day to day with a knee injury.

The Niners were able to activate five players who hadn't practiced since the start of camp last week. Receiver Trent Taylor (back), linebacker Dekoda Watson (calf) and guard Jonathan Cooper (knee) were taken off the physically unable to perform list. Linebacker Malcolm Smith (lower leg) and defensive back Marcell Harris (Achilles) were activated from the non-football injury list.

San Francisco also signed tight end Wes Saxton to a one-year deal and waived cornerback C.J. Goodwin.
